Open Burns are PROHIBITED in the Village of Spring Grove,

Except as permitted below:

  • Leaves, Brush & Yard Waste:

    • April, May, October & November

    • Dawn to dusk

    • When there has been no more than 1/2 in. of rain within 48 hours

  • EXCEPTION:  If the fire is greater than 500 feet from any structure, 

it  is permitted any day dawn to dusk according to the other provisions.

 

  • Campfires less than 4 feet in diameter, less than 2 feet in height, 

fueled by clean, untreated, dried wood or paper, anytime.

  • Grills and barbecues, fueled by wood, charcoal and LPG, 

provided the material to be burned is enclosed.

  • Clean, untreated, dried wood or paper in a pit or 

other enclosure, max 6 feet in diameter, dawn to dusk.

  • Fire Department Training controlled burns, with the appropriate 

EPA permit and State Historical Society permit (if required).

  • Annual high school bonfire, with approval of the Fire Chief 

& under supervision of the fire department.

 

All Permitted Open Burns 

must meet the following criteria:

 

  • Shall be attended at all times by a responsible person, capable of 

extinguishing the fire should the need arise

  • Shall be at least 30 feet from any structure, except that grills and 

barbecues may be closer than 30 feet provided that care is taken 

to prevent spread to structures

  • Shall NOT be ignited when the wind could create a nuisance  

by carrying smoke or ash near a neighboring house.

  • Shall NOT be ignited on any village street or walkway

Shall NOT be ignited or fueled with any highly flammable, 

explosive or hazardous material


OPEN BURN BEST PRACTICE:

WHEN IN DOUBT - Don't IGNITE IT!


Upon Violation of this Open Burn Ordinance:

  • The fire will be extinguished 

either by the owner/attendant or by 

the Spring Grove Fire Protection District

  • First Violation: 

     

    • Written warning from code enforcement officer or police

     

  • Second Violation: 

    • Standard Fine: $100.00 plus an increase of additional $50.0 er offense for each subsequent offense

    • Plus the cost of police and fire department manpowerid to each department) where their services are required
